Drive Guidelines
PACE members are encouraged to share their enjoyment of Miatas by planning, organizing, and
leading group drives. Whether it’s a drive from the archives or something new, drive leaders
are free to choose the route, destination, date and time, length of drive, and more.
Below are a few guidelines to keep in mind when you’re planning, leading, or participating in a
Miata club drive. If it’s your first time as drive leader, feel free to contact one of our
experienced members for suggestions, help, or advice.
Safety
The safety of our members, and the traveling public with whom we share the roads, is PACE
Miata Club’s primary concern. Drive leaders and participants should observe all traffic rules
and regulations while traveling on public roads.
PACE Miata Club recommends all cars travel with headlights ON during club events.
Planning
Lay out your route ahead of time and do at least one pre-run. If possible, the pre-run should
include the same traffic conditions you anticipate on the day of the event.
Send information about your drive to the Events Coordinator and Web Page Coordinator.
Choose a starting point with adequate parking and easy access to fuel, food, and bathrooms.
For longer drives, schedule adequate rest breaks.
Designate safe places to regroup after going through areas where the line of cars may become
separated.
Leading
Written directions are very helpful, and should be prepared ahead of time. These may be
handed out at the starting point or emailed to participants in advance of the event.
Prior to departure, decide who will be the tail (the last car in line), and how the leader and tail
will communicate with each other.
Do your best to keep the group together, but accept that the line may become separated at
some point. Don’t block traffic or public access when this happens. Proceed to your next
designated regrouping location and wait for the stragglers to catch up.
Participants
Inform the drive leader ahead of time of your intention to participate.
Inform the drive leader if your plans change and you are unable to participate.
Start the drive with a full tank of gas.
If you’re new to driving with a group, try to position your Miata near the front of the line.
Stay together. You’re more likely to miss a turn if you lose sight of the Miata in front of you.
Be courteous to other drivers. Do not block public access or impede traffic in an attempt to
keep the line together.
Don’t forget about the Miata behind you. Ideally, you should always be able to see the Miata in
front of you and the Miata behind you.
Have fun!
