Paul and I will be leading a unique drive about Gettysburg.
We will have a safety meeting at 10 AM. With a pull-out of the parking lot time of 10:15. Meet at:
Sheetz on Baltimore Pike, by Route 15
1978 Baltimore Pike
Gettysburg, PA 17325
We will be roughly following part of the retreat of the Confederates from the battle. We will be heading to Monterey Pass, where there was a battle between the retreating Confederates and the pursuing Union cavalry.
On the evening of 04-05 Jul, the battle occurred in the hills of South Mountain about the Monterey Pass.
Along the way we will stop at the Fountaindale Volunteer Fire Company to see the plaques placed there commemorating the battle.
We will then stop at the local park at the site of the battle, where we can look at some of the signage. There are trails that can be walked, but we will not do so. There is also a small museum that is open during weekends. So, we will at least introduce our fellow PACErs to the battle of Monterey Pass.
From there, we shall head through Fort Ritchie to High Rock by Pen Mar Maryland, where we can look out upon the line of retreat in Pennsylvania of the Confederates.
Our ride back to Gettysburg will take us over South Mountain, where we will have fun twisting our way through the passes and orchards of South Mountain.
The ride is about 3 hours of time, maybe a wee-bit more with the stops depending on how long folks want to stay at each point.
There is one pee-break at a Sheetz in Rouzerville – oh wait – it is temporarily closed !!! Well, I will be there the week before, so I will double check on this. If not open, there is a Walmart super-center just up the road that we do go by, so we can stop there for a pee break if need be.
We will end up back in Gettysburg – at the National Military Park Visitor Center and Museum.
There is not a lunch stop included, well – wait – why not a picnic lunch.
Everyone should bring a picnic lunch and we can eat up at High Rock.
The ride is very scenic, historic and twisty.
A few of our fellow zoomers have helped us refine this ride. It got high praise from everyone involved. So, here is hoping that we have a great turnout for what will be a very unique ride!
